Electroacupuncture
Electroacupuncture consists of applying therapeutic electrical current to acupuncture needles through electrostimulation devices .
The purpose of electroacupuncture is to intensify the effectiveness of traditional acupuncture, allowing more continuous and controlled stimulation of acupuncture points. Unlike manual acupuncture, which relies on the acupuncturist's skill in manipulating the needles, electroacupuncture allows for precise and consistent stimulation.
Several benefits of electroacupuncture have been identified. It may be useful for treating fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and tennis elbow, according to the National Institutes of Health . It also provides pain relief, whether chronic or acute, stress management, improved blood circulation and stimulation of tissue healing.
In many cases, electroacupuncture can be an effective, non-pharmacological alternative for pain management.
The choice of acupuncture points for electroacupuncture, as in traditional acupuncture, is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. However, due to the higher intensity of stimulation, careful selection and a solid knowledge of anatomy and physiology are advised.
